Jörg Schmidt (canoeist)

Jörg Schmidt (born February 16, 1961 in Berlin ) is a former German canoeist who competed for the GDR .

Jörg Schmidt began his sporting career in 1972 at BSG Turbine Halle. From 1974 he attended the children's and youth sports school in Magdeburg, from 1975 he started for the SC Berlin-Grünau . In 1984 after his marriage to Birgit Fischer he moved to ASK Vorwärts Potsdam .

Schmidt won the Spartakiade in 1977 in the single Canadian over 1000 meters. In 1979 he was three-time junior champion of the GDR. Schmidt won his first championship title in the adult class in 1980 over 1000 meters ahead of Eckhard Leue . Leue competed at the 1980 Olympics and won the bronze medal. In 1982 Schmidt won both the GDR championship over 500 meters and the 1000 meters. Over 1000 meters he defeated Eckhard Leue and Ulrich Papke , who had won the world championship title over this distance in 1981. Schmidt also represented the GDR at the World Cup in Belgrade and won the 1000 meter title. In 1983 Schmidt defended his GDR championship title over 1000 meters. In 1984 Schmidt represented the GDR at theFriendship competitions , the substitute competitions for athletes from countries that did not take part in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles because of the Olympic boycott. In the friendship competitions, Jörg Schmidt took second place behind the Latvian Ivan Klementjevs, who started for the Soviet Union .

In 1986 Schmidt took second place in the GDR championship over 500 meters behind Olaf Heukrodt and over 1000 meters behind Ulrich Papke. In 1987 Heukrodt won both distances ahead of Schmidt. Five years after his last championship title, Schmidt won again over 1000 meters in 1988. At the 1988 Olympic Games , Jörg Schmidt received the silver medal behind Ivans Klementjevs. For this success he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver. He also received this medal in 1984.

Jörg Schmidt was a trained electrician and rose to become an officer in the NVA . From 1984 to 1993 Schmidt was married to the canoeist Birgit Fischer , and the marriage resulted in two children.
