In 1967 he was elected professor for structural engineering and construction at the ETH Zurich and retired in 1999 after 33 years . He held the farewell lecture on the subject of questioning questions - taking responsibility for answers .

He dealt in particular with safety and reliability in the construction industry and later also with the safety in the operation of AlpTransit , the long Gotthard and Lötschberg railway tunnels crossing the Alps . After his retirement he founded the engineering office Risk & Safety AG in Aarau with Ehrfried Kölz, Marcel Bürge and Hans Stampfli .
