Jörg Schwedes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jörg Schwedes (born February 26, 1938 in Berlin ; † August 21, 2018 in Braunschweig ) was a German process engineer and from 1976 to 2005 professor of process engineering at the Institute for Mechanical Process Engineering at the TU Braunschweig . From 1982 to 1984 Vice President of the TU Braunschweig and from 1989 to 1991 Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

Live and act

Jörg Schwedes studied process engineering , did his doctorate in 1971 at the Technical University of Karlsruhe (KIT) with Hans Rumpf with the dissertation shear behavior of slightly compacted cohesive bulk materials and was one of the first Rumpf students in the field of mechanical process engineering . He was the first researcher in Germany to scientifically investigate the flow properties of bulk materials , using a Jenike shear device as well as a single shear device developed in -house . Jörg Schwedes became very well known in Germany for his book on the flow properties of bulk materials and the procedure for designing silos to avoid flow problems on the basis of scientific findings, which he published while he was still doing his doctorate . After receiving his doctorate in 1971, he worked for a few years at Bayer AG in the field of research and development and transferred his knowledge of process engineering silo design to the chemical industry before moving to the TU Braunschweig as professor for mechanical process engineering in 1976.

Jörg Schwedes headed the Institute for Mechanical Process Engineering for almost 30 years and continued his research in the field of bulk material technology , in particular the measurement of flow properties, with innovative shear devices such as the two-axial box and the design of silos. In addition, he developed and expanded the research area of comminution, for example dry grinding in vibratory mills , but especially wet fine comminution with agitator ball mills . In addition to his scientific work, the practice-oriented application was a large part of his teaching. The industrial consulting activity then also led to the foundation of the engineering office Schwedes + Schulze Schüttguttechnik , which is today a leading engineering office in the field of bulk material technology in Europe. From the perspective of bulk material mechanics, he contributed to the silo manual edited by Peter Martens in 1988. In addition, he held an annual university course on silo design for industrial employees.

Jörg Schwedes was not only very active in research, but teaching, for which he has received several awards, and university self-administration were very important to him. Among other things, he was Vice President of the University from 1982 to 1984 and Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering from 1989 to 1991. A very important contribution for the university was his great commitment to the development of a European student exchange program, the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), in which the mutual recognition of academic achievements was developed and established. This pioneering work with selected universities in Europe was the basis for today's Erasmus exchange program , in which almost all European universities participate.

Outside the university, Jörg Schwedes made a lasting impression on the German, European and international scientific community. Among other things, he headed the German technical committee for agglomeration and bulk material technology of the VDI-Gesellschaft process engineering and chemical engineering (GVC) for many years and was a central member of the European working group of the same name. In this context, before and after the reunification, he was very committed to an exchange with his East German and Eastern European colleagues. Another important scientific success was the establishment of the DFG priority program for the generation, classification, separation and measurement of the finest particles, which brought the German working groups of mechanical process engineering much closer together. At the TU Braunschweig he also led a research group in the field of disperse systems in biotechnological processes. This strong connection between biotechnology and process engineering is still very active at the TU Braunschweig.

During his academic career, he has published more than 500 articles and has been an invited speaker at numerous conferences. He supervised more than 50 doctoral students and countless graduate students who are now active in leading positions in industry and science.

Arno Kwade was appointed as the successor to Schwedes in 2005 and has since headed the former Institute for Mechanical Process Engineering (iPat) at the TU Braunschweig, which was renamed the Institute for Particle Technology.
