Jörgen Smit (born July 21, 1916 in Bergen ; † May 10, 1991 in Arlesheim ) was a Norwegian teacher, university lecturer, speaker and publicist, especially in the context of the Waldorf movement and the Anthroposophical Society . He worked as general secretary of the Anthroposophical Society in Norway, as co-founder of the Rudolf Steiner Seminar in Järna and as a board member of the General Anthroposophical Society at the Goetheanum .

Life

Jörgen Smit grew up as the second of seven sons in Bergen, later in Oslo . He came from an anthroposophical family, his father Christian Sundt Smit became the first pastor in the Christian community in 1926 . in Norway when Jörgen was 10 years old. He studied classical philology in Oslo and Basel , majoring in ancient Greek . From 1941 to 1965 he worked as a teacher at the Rudolf Steiner School in Bergen. In addition to his teaching activities, he became a speaker on a wide range of topics from a young age, mostly with reference to anthroposophy and Waldorf education . From 1966 to 1975 he played a decisive role in setting up the Rudolf Steiner Seminar in Järna by building up the teachers' seminar there. In collaboration with the artist Arne Klingborg , the architect Erik Asmussen and the entrepreneur Âke Kumlander, a larger anthroposophical center was created within a few years.

In 1975 he was appointed to the board of the General Anthroposophical Society in Dornach , where, in addition to his general board activities, he headed the youth section and later also the pedagogical section. He gave more than half of the 4889 lectures he held throughout his life in the 16 years of Dornach until his death in 1991. He gave lecture tours on all continents, albeit mainly in Europe. The majority of his printed works are edited transcripts of his lectures.
