Jörn Peckmann (* 1969 in Kassel ) is a German palaeontologist and geologist ( sedimentology ) who is a professor at the University of Vienna .

Life

He studied geology and paleontology in Göttingen, where he received his doctorate on cold seeps under Joachim Reitner in 2000 . He then worked at the Universities of Göttingen, Reading and Bremen (Prof. for Geobiology) before becoming Professor for Sedimentology and Stratigraphy at the University of Vienna in 2010.

Peckmann deals with the formation of new minerals in sediments induced by microbes ( prokaryotes ). He examines both recent and fossil geo-biotopes, e.g. B. Cold seeps in the Black Sea, in which methane is formed. He studied microorganisms in basalts in ocean floors and on land and their role in the formation of carbonates, sulfur deposits, phosphorites and evaporites . He uses isotope analysis and analyzes fossil molecules ( lipid markers) to reconstruct the paleo-environment.

2014 he was awarded with Andreas Kroh to Friedrich von Alberti Award , found for his contributions to the study of Geobiology of extreme habitats and his work on the phylogenetic development of cold seep communities that the highest international attention and discipline Paleontology new paths revealed have (laudation from Reitner).

He is co-editor of Palaios, Terra Nova and Facies. From 2007 to 2011 he was on the editorial board of Sedimentary Geology.
