history

school-building

The school was run by the Jewish community of Breisach am Rhein . The Baden Jewish edict of 1809 allowed the Jewish communities to build their own schools, provided they covered the costs.

The school was located in the former Zum Sankt Peter inn at Rheintorstrasse 3. Around 1850 the school had around 100 students.

The Jewish elementary schools were dissolved with the introduction of simultaneous schools in the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1876. The Jewish school in Breisach continued as a religious school.

school-building

The building served at times as a Jewish hospital for the poor and as a Jewish community center with the cantor's apartment . After the synagogue was destroyed in the November pogrom in 1938, a prayer room was set up in the schoolhouse from 1938 to 1940. After 1940 the building was used as a workshop and after 1955 as a residential building. In 2000, the building was acquired by the Former Jewish Community Center . A memorial and meeting place has been set up there since 2003.
