The new synagogue is the assembly and church of the Jewish community Bochum-Herne-Hattingen on Erich-Mendel- Platz in Bochum in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The former Old Synagogue on today's Huestraße (formerly Wilhelmstraße 18) was destroyed during the November pogroms in 1938 . On the side wall of the business building on the site of the former Jewish school, a warning plaque reminds of the former synagogue.

The new building ensemble was constructed from 2005 to 2007 under the direction of the architecture office Peter Schmitz, the total costs amounted to seven million euros. Peter Schmitz from Cologne for the building design and Ulrike Beuter from the Oberhausen planning group for landscape architecture had won the architecture competition held a year earlier in 2005. This was preceded in 2003 by the donation of the representative, 4,300 square meter property from the city of Bochum to the Jewish community. At the end of 2005, the foundation stone for the new synagogue was laid.

The new synagogue was ceremoniously opened on December 16, 2007, and the speakers included Norbert Lammert , President of the Bundestag from Bochum, Ottilie Scholz , Mayor of Bochum, Jürgen Rüttgers , then Prime Minister of the State , Charlotte Knobloch , President of the Central Council and Rabbi Avichai Apel, Benzion Dov Kaplan, Henry G. Brandt, and Julien Chaim Soussan .

architecture

The entrance, foyer, meeting room, café and ancillary building are low, objectively designed additions on the sharp-edged plateau lined with concrete walls. The actual synagogue is a mighty cube that corresponds with the neighboring hemisphere of the planetarium standing on a softly modeled hill . On the outer surfaces of the block, which is almost completely closed, the flat relief of the stone cladding forms an ornament of stars of David . The elongated, sawn natural stones with their protruding and recessed walls cite the brick expressionism in the Ruhr area. In the middle, small triangles in the pattern serve as windows, inside they together form a surrounding frieze of stars.

The square hall is spanned by a suspended, golden-yellow canopy with a light opening in the middle, set off from the walls with a light gap. It gives the room the sublime atmosphere desired by the community. On the east side of the building in the direction of Jerusalem ( Misrach ) there are five large, square, ground-level windows, in front of the middle one is the Torah shrine .

Jewish community Bochum-Herne-Hattingen

The Jewish community of Bochum-Herne-Hattingen is a member of the regional association of the Jewish communities of Westphalia-Lippe . Like the Jewish community of Recklinghausen, it came into being at the beginning of 1999 when the community of Bochum-Herne-Recklinghausen was divided .

The municipality of Bochum-Herne-Hattingen had 1,038 members in 2018 and 1,065 in 2014. It is the second largest municipality in Westphalia. The chairman of the parish was Grigory Rabinovich. The work of the community includes the implementation of religious events, celebrations and religious education. In addition, it offers its members social support, participation in various clubs and further training courses and organizes sporting and cultural events for all fellow citizens as well as events for children and young people. The offer also includes language courses.

In 2017, the members of the community decided not to wear a kippah in public because they were repeatedly exposed to insults as soon as they were recognized as Jews on the street.
