middle Ages

Hohebach was first mentioned in a document in 1238, when pastor Conrad von Hohebach bought goods from Konrad von Krautheim in order to give them to the church to maintain an eternal light. Originally Hohebach was owned by the Lords of Krautheim, the Lords of Hohebach sat as their servants on the Burkenberg, a hill jutting out towards the Jagsttal. Konrad von Krautheim founded a Cistercian monastery around 1240, which was moved to Gnadental as early as 1245.

Modern times

Under King Friedrich I , the bridge over the Jagst was first built in stone from 1808 to 1810. The road over this new bridge became the military road for Emperor Napoleon I ; then the Württemberg soldiers marched towards Russia in 1812.

In 1568 the Hohebacher Mühle was built as a grain mill and later also used as a saw and plaster mill and as a tanning mill. Electrical engineer Wilhelm Roesler converted the mill into an electricity station ( hydroelectric power station ) in 1910 and set up an overland control center here. At that time, the local area was electrified from Hohebach to the Creglingen - Rothenburg area. Today it feeds the electricity into the public grid. The original turbine from 1910 is still running today.

Jewish community in Hohebach

The Jewish community of Hohebach built a synagogue in 1817 and in the 19th century belonged to the district rabbinate Weikersheim , after its dissolution to the district rabbinate Mergentheim . In 1852 the Jewish cemetery Hohebach was laid out in the direction of Ailringen. The cemetery has 299 graves. Since 1986, a memorial plaque on the building of the former Hohebach synagogue has been commemorating the church of the Jewish fellow citizens, which was demolished by SA men in the November pogrom in 1938 . In the Jewish cemetery there is a memorial stone for the last eight Jewish residents who were deported and killed in the 1940s.

Buildings and cultural monuments

As the only suburb of Dörzbach, Hohebach does not have a baron castle, but it does have a real royal bridge: The huge four-arched stone bridge was built from 1808 to 1810 by Karl August Friedrich von Duttenhofer at the behest of King Friedrich I of Württemberg, who strategically acquired his northern part of Hohenlohe, which was newly acquired by Napoleon and wanted to connect better to the Swabian heartland in terms of traffic. A high sandstone column in the middle of the bridge bears the Roman year MDCCCX and the royal monogram FR with the national coat of arms. According to Karl Julius Weber , it is “the most beautiful bridge in the entire Kingdom of Württemberg”. Towards the end of the Second World War , the two northern arches of the bridge were blown up, and they were rebuilt in 1947. From 1996 to 1998 the bridge, over which the Federal Highway 19 now runs, was repaired and widened while maintaining its design.

sport and freetime

Hohebach has a lively club life. Men's choir, trombone choir, country women, volunteer fire brigade and sports club organize the bridge festival, which is known far beyond the borders.

Economy and Infrastructure

Hohebach is characterized by agriculture and is developing more and more into a residential building site. There is a kindergarten in Hohebach.
