Memorial stone for the last Jewish inhabitants of Hohebach

The Jewish cemetery near Hohebach , a district of Dörzbach in the Hohenlohe district in Baden-Württemberg , was the burial place of the Jewish community in Hohebach from 1852 to 1940 .

history

After the dead of the community had been buried in the Jewish cemetery in Unterbalbach until 1741 and then in the Jewish cemetery in Weikersheim , the Israelitische Friedhofsgemeinde bought 18.91 a piece of land northeast of Hohebach above the road to Ailringen from the dealer Mendle Wolf Strauss in 1852 , which had previously been used as a vineyard, and created a fenced-in cemetery here. In addition to the Jewish residents of Hohebach, Jews from Ailringen, Mulfingen , Dörzbach, Hollenbach , Laibach , Altkrautheim and Künzelsau also used the cemetery. The rectangular cemetery surrounded by a wall is located on a hillside between former vineyards, of which the dry stone walls are still preserved. It forms one of the stops on the Path of Silence around Dörzbach and Hohebach.

300 graves were laid in the cemetery, which were photographically documented in 1988 for the central archive for research into the history of Jews in Germany.

Individual graves

The first burial took place on March 8, 1852; it was the funeral of the seventeen-year-old daughter Fanni of the former property owner. On March 20, 1933, the Künzelsau businessman Max Ledermann suffered a fatal heart attack in the face of his teacher Julius Goldstein, who had been badly abused by the Nazis. Ledermann was buried in Hohebach. Eight days later, fellow citizen David Furchheimer committed suicide. He was given a grave next to Ledermann. In January 1940, Judit Julchen Stern was buried here as the last deceased parishioner. A memorial stone was later erected on the grounds of the cemetery for eight Jewish fellow citizens who were deported and killed in 1941 and 1942 .
