The Jewish cemetery Unterbalbach is a Jewish cemetery in Unterbalbach , a district of Lauda-Königshofen in the Main-Tauber district in northern Baden-Württemberg .

The Jewish cemetery is located on the road from Unterbalbach to Oberbalbach (K 2847).

Originally it was located far outside the village, now it is surrounded by residential developments. The south is bounded by the Balbach, the other sides by walls. The old entrance in the northwest corner is now partially below street level and is bricked up. From the current entrance through a double-door wrought iron gate under a sandstone arch in the middle of the north wall, steps lead down to the level of the cemetery.

history

The Jewish cemetery in Unterbalbach was established in the middle of the 16th century, the first reliable mention is from 1590. The Teutonic Order had accepted some Jews in Unterbalbach . On February 22, 1590, the German master Archduke Maximilian confirmed the right of the Jews of Mergentheim , Markelsheim , Igersheim and Unterbalbach to continue to bury their dead on the burial ground above the village of Unterbalbach for an annual payment of 16 guilders . In the following centuries, Jews from the wide area were buried in this association cemetery: from Hohebach , Hollenbach , Igersheim, Laudenbach , Markelsheim, Mergentheim, Mulfingen , Niederstetten and Weikersheim .

Today there are 1,358 mazewot left in the 85- acre cemetery . The oldest tombstone is from 1798, the last burial took place in 1967.
