Jewish cemetery in Tauberbischofsheim

The Jewish cemetery Tauberbischofsheim is a Jewish cemetery in Tauberbischofsheim , a town in the Main-Tauber district in northern Baden-Württemberg . It is located right next to the Tauberbischofsheim municipal cemetery on Hochhäuser Straße.

history

The dead of the Jewish community of Tauberbischofsheim were initially buried in the Jewish cemetery in Külsheim , but from 1875 onwards, due to a lack of space, it could only accommodate the dead of the Jewish community in Külsheim . In 1875, at the request of the Jewish community, the Tauberbischofsheim city council set up a separate cemetery on Hochhäuser Strasse, which is located directly next to the city cemetery. The parties involved proposed an expansion of the Christian cemetery and a division into a Jewish and a Christian part. The city of Tauberbischofsheim initially wanted to cover the costs of the cemetery, which the Jewish community and the Tauberbischofsheim district office agreed to. On January 17, 1876, however, the ministry decreed that the costs of the Jewish cemetery were to be borne solely by the Jewish community of Tauberbischofsheim. As a result, they had to buy the property and build a surrounding wall.

After 1875, the dead from the neighboring Jewish community of Dittigheim were also buried in the Tauberbischofsheim Jewish cemetery. These were previously buried in Allersheim .

The area of the Jewish cemetery is 8.06 acres . Today there are still 143 tombstones , 36 of which are children's graves. The last burial took place in 1939.
