history
The cemetery, which existed at least since 1748, was occupied from 1805 to 1937. From 1954 it was owned by the Jewish Trust Corporation (JTC) and since 1959 it has been owned by the State Association of Jewish Communities of Lower Saxony . From 1959, a nursery was responsible for maintaining the cemetery and the Papenburg Garden and Cemetery Office has been responsible since 1982. The cemetery has been repeatedly destroyed since the beginning of the 20th century: gravestones were damaged in 1912, 1928, 1929 and during the Nazi era . It was also desecrated after the Second World War in 1949, 1953, 1955 and 1971. Repairs were carried out in 1951/1952, 1958, 1978, 1987 and 1989.
