Jewish cemetery (Goldberg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Goldberg Jewish cemetery was a Jewish cemetery in Goldberg in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It was leveled in 1950 and later built on.

description

The cemetery was on Güstrower Strasse, at the corner of John-Brinckman-Strasse , near the municipal cemetery. The 742 m² plot of land was sold to the city by the regional Jewish community in 1950 .

history

The time when the cemetery was founded is not known. The last burial took place in 1918. There is no record of desecration during the Nazi era . In 1950 the city bought the property from the state community for 400 marks. The completely overgrown area was cleared in 1953. It served as a garden until 1988, when a department store was built over the property. The state authorities of the GDR forbade putting up a memorial plaque . A memorial plaque is still missing today.

The former synagogue at Jungfernstrasse 36, built in 1845, was used commercially after the First World War. The Catholic Church acquired the building in 1925. After several renovations, it has been used for worship since then. A memorial plaque in the courtyard indicates the origin of the building.
