Jewish cemetery (Schwaan)
The Jüdische Friedhof Schwaan is a former Jewish cemetery of the Jewish community in the town of Schwaan in the Rostock district in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . In the cemetery on Lindenbruchstrasse, there are still seven tombstones that were restored and re-erected in 2009.
history
The cemetery is already shown in a city map from 1771 as "Jüdenfriedhoff". In December 1914 it became the property of the city, as the Jewish community around 1914 only consisted of four community members. The cemetery, which was occupied until 1936, was devastated during the Nazi era . After 1947, as far as possible, it was restored by the Mecklenburg State Jewish Community . In the 1960s, when a new development area was being built, it was moved to a small hill lined with trees near the original site. Some tombstones were put back up. The remaining stones, the number of which is unknown, were used "for other purposes". In 1988 a memorial stone was erected in the complex .
