Juerg Helbling

Jürg Helbling (born July 6, 1954 ) is a Swiss ethnologist and senior professor of economic and political ethnology at the Sociological Seminar of the University of Lucerne .

Life

From 1973 to 1979 Helbling studied ethnology (with Prof. Lorenz Löffler ), philosophy and modern history at the University of Zurich . He completed his studies with a licentiate thesis on “New trends in French ethnology” and then worked as an assistant. In 1984 he received his doctorate on the subject of «Theory of the hunter society».

Between 1985 and 1988 he carried out field research in Mindoro , Philippines , and completed his habilitation in 1990 with a thesis on “Power, Kinship and Production: The Alangan-Mangyan in Northeast Mindoro” at the University of Zurich . From 1995 to 2008 he was Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Zurich. From 1997 to 2006 he also lectured on environmental history at the ETH Zurich . In 1998 he was visiting professor at the University of Vienna and in 2010 a fellow at the Cultural Studies College at the University of Konstanz . Since 2008 he has been Professor of Ethnology at the University of Lucerne .

His main areas of teaching and research include:

  • Economic ethnology: use of resources, production and reproduction strategies in pre-industrial economic systems
  • Political ethnology: war and peace, power relations and political strategies, kinship and exchange of gifts, forms of legitimation of power
  • Environmental history from a world historical perspective and political economy
  • History of theories in ethnology and related sciences ( sociology , political science and economics ).
