Trutz von Trotha

Trutz von Trotha-Witzenmann (born September 16, 1946 in Dieburg ; † May 18, 2013 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German sociologist and professor of sociology at the University of Siegen .

Life

The adopted son of the company heir Walter Witzenmann (1908–2004) and the theater actress Ruth Wolber (1909–2012) spent his school days in Pforzheim in northern Baden . He studied sociology, political science and modern history in Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1972 he received his doctorate from Heinrich Popitz at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg and in 1980, also from the University of Freiburg, his habilitation . From 1973 to 1974 he went as a postdoctoral fellow of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to the Department of Sociology of the University of California, San Diego and to Pullman , Washington State to the Social Research Center of the Washington State University under its then director, the sociologist and Criminologist James F. Short Jr. From 1977 to 1979 Trutz von Trotha was a habilitation fellow from the German Research Foundation (DFG) . In 1979 the criminal sociologist Fritz Sack hired him as a research assistant for the law department of the University of Hanover . From 1981 to 1987 Trutz von Trotha took over a professorship for the sociology of deviant behavior and social control in this department. From 1985 to 1989 he was a DFG Heisenberg fellow. As holder of a chair for sociology, von Trotha taught at the University of Siegen from 1989 until his retirement in 2009. In 1994 he was visiting professor at the Laboratoire d'anthropologie juridique de Paris (LAJP) of the Sorbonne and at the same time visiting scholar at the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l'Homme (fmsh) at Maison Suger, Paris.

The German Society for Sociology has been awarding the Thomas A. Herz Prize for Qualitative Social Research , founded by Claudia and Trutz von Trotha, since 2014 .

Work areas

Trutz von Trotha's main areas of work were political sociology and ethnology , sociology of violence and war, colonial history, legal ethnology and sociology, criminal sociology, and sociology and social history of the family and youth. In his scientific work, Trutz von Trotha follows the close connection between sociology, ethnology and history. Even after his retirement, Trutz von Trotha was active in research, dealing with questions of the sociology of war and the emergence of new forms of political power and rule, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Trutz von Trotha has published a total of six monographs, edited eight works and published over one hundred articles. Together with Étienne Le Roy (LAJP, Sorbonne), he founded the "Rencontres franco-allemandes des anthropologues du Droit (RFAAD)" in 1988, an interdisciplinary working group of German and French legal anthropologists that has been organizing international conferences for 15 years and promoting cooperation between European Has promoted legal anthropologists. In 1993 Trutz von Trotha was an election observer for the presidential elections in Togo on behalf of the Federal Foreign Office . As part of the self-administration of science, he has worked as a reviewer for national and international scientific foundations and research organizations, especially for the DFG, since the 1990s. He was also a member of the board of the “Political Sociology” section of the German Society for Sociology and was its chairman from 2002 to 2007.

Since 1998 as a member, since 2001 as chairman of the supervisory board and member of the management advisory board of the Witzenmann Group in Pforzheim, Trutz von Trotha also worked for a company in the metal processing industry in Baden-Württemberg.
