Jürgen Corleis

Hans-Jürgen Corleis (born July 11, 1929 in Wiesbaden ; † August 11, 2011 in Sydney ) was a German- Australian journalist , author and director.

Life

Jürgen Corleis' journalistic career began in 1955 with the Hamburg magazine Kristall . He was a co-founder of the student newspaper Studentenkurier, which was renamed to concrete in 1957 . He reported u. a. from the Algerian war . From 1959 he worked as a freelance press photographer for various magazines and newspapers (e.g. Stern , Der Spiegel , Time Magazine ). From 1967 to 1969 he worked for Stern TV as an editor, author and director of contemporary history television documentaries. He then worked as a freelance writer and director at Chronos Film in Berlin, producing television documentaries on German post-war politics and portraits of politicians. He also worked for various West German television companies and was a regular employee of the television magazine Kontraste for the broadcaster Free Berlin . In 1978 Corleis founded his own production company, Southern Cross Productions Pty. Ltd. in Sydney and since 1985 has been the Australia correspondent for the Springer foreign service of Axel Springer Verlag . Corleis was for 18 years (until 2010) board member of the Foreign Correspondents Association in Australia, and its president from 2000 to 2002. Jürgen Corleis lived with his wife in the Blue Mountains near Sydney until his death .

Jürgen Corleis shot around 80 television documentaries, including the first television portrait of Ernesto “Che” Guevara (Myth and Reality) and the film Bergen Belsen, which is shown in the memorial to this day - for example about the liberation of the concentration camp.
