Jürgen Gerhards

Jürgen Gerhards (born March 12, 1955 in Andernach ) is a German sociologist .

From 1982 to 1988 he was a research assistant at the University of Cologne and received his doctorate there in 1987 with a thesis on the sociology of emotions . In 1988 Gerhards moved to the newly founded Public and Social Movements Department at the Berlin Science Center and stayed there until 1994. He completed his habilitation in 1992 at the Free University of Berlin. From 1994 to 2004 he was professor for cultural sociology and general sociology at the Institute for Cultural Studies at the University of Leipzig . In 2004 he received a professorship in macro-sociology at the Institute for Sociology at the Free University of Berlin . Jürgen Gerhards was a fellow at the following institutions: 2001/2002 at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin , 2003/2004 at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (Uppsala / Sweden) and 2009/2010 at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University (Cambridge / USA) ). His work focuses on European studies, comparative research, sociology of the public, European public as well as name research from a cultural-sociological point of view.

In 2007 he was elected as a full member of the social science class of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and in 2018 as a member of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldia .
