Jürgen Nogai

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jürgen Nogai (born July 2, 1953 in Jessen ) is a German photographer in the field of architecture and art photography. He lived in Santa Monica , California .

Life

Jürgen Nogai was born in Germany in 1953. He lived and worked as a freelance photo designer in Bremen before moving to Los Angeles in 2000 , where he entered into a creative partnership with the legendary architectural photographer Julius Shulman . The elderly Shulman, who had already retired, saw working with Nogai as an opportunity to get out of his retirement relationship and devote himself to new tasks. They worked together on projects for architects, institutions, publishers and private clients, including the footage of the renovated Getty Museum , which is now in the Getty Research Institute. Shulman and Nogai worked exclusively with analog photo technology in large-format cameras, the recordings work through composition and lighting.

"In truth, Jürgen is who's been keeping me alive, and I can't thank him enough."

- Julius Shulman, 2008

With the death of his friend and business partner Julius Shulman on July 15, 2009, Nogai alone took over the copyright of the entire joint archive .

At the end of 2005, the German Architecture Museum in Frankfurt am Main showed most of Shulman's work, as well as 20 photos from the Shulman & Nogai collaboration. In October 2010 an important special exhibition was opened in the Bassermannhaus museum of the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen under the title Cool and Hot , with loans from the Getty Research Institute (Los Angeles) and partner Jürgen Nogai. His photographs are in the permanent collections of the 'Los Angeles County Museum of Art', Palm Springs Art Museum, DAM Design and Architecture Museum, Frankfurt am Main, Orange County Art Museum, Ca., Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Ca., George Eastman House, Rochester, NY.

In addition to his collaboration with Shulman, Nogai had many projects of his own, which led to numerous publications of illustrated books and non-fiction books. He lectures at various institutions and has been teaching architectural photography workshops in Palm Springs for five years . Today he is back in Germany and teaches various art courses at the Achim secondary school.
