Pohl studied human medicine from 1991 to 1998 at the University of Düsseldorf . From 1996 to 1997 he was a research fellow at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine , New York City, USA. Pohl received his doctorate from the University of Düsseldorf in 1998. In 2005 he was awarded the Venia Legendi in "Internal Medicine" by the University of Heidelberg. He earned the additional qualifications "Emergency Medicine" (2003), "Internal Tumor Therapy" (2010) and "Internal Intensive Care Medicine" (2010) as well as the specialist in internal medicine (2004), the specialist in gastroenterology (2006) and health economist EBS (2009). From 2008 to 2009, Pohl completed a part-time intensive course in health economics at the European Business School, Oestrich-Winkel.

In 2009 he was awarded an extraordinary professorship at Heidelberg University for scientific work on the subject of interventional endoscopy.

Pohl's medical career at clinics shows the following positions: Assistant doctor in the clinic for gastroenterology / hepatology at the University of Heidelberg (1998 to 2005), managing senior physician (HSK) and senior physician in charge of endoscopy at the Dr. Horst Schmidt Clinic Wiesbaden (2007 until 2013), chief physician at the clinic for gastroenterology and interventional endoscopy at the Klinikum im Friedrichshain with location in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin (2013 to 2015). At the end of 2015, Pohl took over the management of the Clinic for Gastroenterology and Interventional Endoscopy at the Asklepios Clinic Altona as chief physician .

Clinical-scientific contribution

The focus of Pohl's clinical and scientific work is diagnostic and interventional endoscopy . As a senior physician, he was involved in the global establishment of endoscopic ablation techniques for the removal of early tumors in the esophagus, stomach and large intestine. Studies that have contributed to the standardization of these methods come from the scientific work of the research team. With endoscopic operations with miniature knives, modern techniques such as endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) can be used to remove tumors endoscopically without cutting from the outside. Another focus of his clinical and scientific work is cholangioscopy , i.e. H. the direct reflection of the biliary tract and the pancreas by endoscopy. He published the first major European series on techniques that allow the early detection and treatment of biliary tract tumors and the treatment of complex gallstones. In 2015 he succeeded Friedrich Hagenmüller as chief physician in the gastroenterological department of the Altona Clinic. Gastroenterology works closely with visceral surgery ( Gero Puhl ) in a new type of cooperation concept . Pohl also became one of three organizers of the “ Endo Club Nord ” congress . This two-day forum for medical professionals, nursing staff and students is the world's largest congress with live endoscopy. The centerpiece is the live broadcasts from the three participating clinics, in which leading gastroenterologists demonstrate proven and innovative endoscopic procedures with modern endoscope and processor technology and explain them in dialogue with the moderators of the congress.

Pohl contributed significantly to the current European guidelines "European Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE)" and their publications on the topics:
