Jürgen Schneider (born December 5, 1952 in Wiesbaden ) is a German translator , editor and author .

Life

Jürgen Schneider attended the business school in Wiesbaden. He studied English, political science and history from 1971 to 1977 in Frankfurt am Main at the Johann-Wolfgang-von-Goethe University. After completing his studies, he first worked in a factory, then in the office of a Frankfurt law firm.

His first translation appeared in 1982. From 1984 to 1986 he completed an apprenticeship as a bookseller in Darmstadt and was a co-founder of the Georg-Büchner-Buchhandlung publishing house. In 1989 he settled in Dublin. The study Literature without Frontiers , co-authored with Michael Cronin and Liam Mac Cóil . Irish Literary Translation in the European Context / Litríocht gan Teorainn. An tAistriú Litheartha Eireannach i gComhtéacs na hEorpa (1990) led to the establishment of Ireland Literature Exchange .

In 1990 Schneider co-founded the Dublin publishing house LiterÉire . He became known this year for his translation of the novel The Hare of the Dog (dt. The dog ) from the pen of the Belfast writer Sean McGuffin. Jürgen Busche wrote in the weekly post: “You don't really know who McGuffin is. It is said that he has lived as a lawyer in San Francisco since he left Belfast. Nobody in Belfast knows him. His books are also unknown there. It only seems to be available in German. In 1991 Schneider returned to Germany and founded the galerie + edition caoc in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg , showed works by Irish and other international artists and published artist books and editions. In 1999 he was a visiting professor at the Limerick School of Art and Design.

Schneider received several grants for work stays in Germany and abroad.

His first novel, RMX , was published in October 2011.
