In the summer of 1952, at the age of 16 and with the necessary declaration of consent from his parents, Schwandt was hired as a cabin boy on the mizzen ship Argonaut . In 1955, at the age of 19, he served on the freighter Franziska Sartori , on which he survived a severe hurricane . In 1966, at the age of 30, Schwandt became captain of Ludwigsburg. Journalistic activity

Jürgen Schwandt works as a columnist for the Hamburger Morgenpost and the Ankerherz publishing house. He is also active as a blogger on Facebook with over 140,000 followers (as of August 2016).

The content of his columns and Facebook posts is, in addition to his seafaring stories, above all the fight against xenophobia and right-wing populism.

“I have met good people all over the world on my travels. And a couple of ass violins too. It has nothing to do with skin color, passport or religion. "

- Jürgen Schwandt

While at the beginning of 2015 the political movement PEGIDA and its supporters still dominated the content of Schwandt's columns and postings, today the political party Alternative for Germany (AfD) with its leading politicians is the central theme of his texts. Especially among his Facebook posts, there are often insulting and highly degrading comments against Schwandt. He usually emphasizes such comments as negative examples.

Since August 2016, NDR television has been broadcasting a weekly column with Captain Schwandt in the Kulturjournal program under the title Schwandt in Sight .

In October 2016, Schwandt announced that he would be ceasing to work as a columnist for the Hamburger Morgenpost due to age and health issues. On January 2, 2017, the administrators of Schwandt's Facebook page announced that the page would no longer be used for political statements. For health reasons, these were recently only carried out by administrators of the Ankerherz publishing house on behalf of Schwandt. The site should continue to operate, but only news about Jürgen Schwandt's health should be posted. In practice, however, numerous political statements are still being published there.
