Jürgen Werner I (born December 3, 1961 in Wels ) is a former Austrian national soccer player . Following his active career, he worked as a football manager and player agent. His name tag "I", which has been preserved to this day, was given to him because he played a major part of his career at VÖEST together with his famous namesake Jürgen Werner II .

Career

Jürgen Werner I came via SK Eintracht Wels to the Austrian 1st Division at SK VOEST Linz , where the midfielder made his debut in the 1980/81 season. Although he was mostly in the lower half of the table with VOEST and had to go to the middle play-off in 1985/86 , Jürgen Werner made his first international appearance for the Austrian national team on September 10, 1986 in the European Championship qualification against Romania .

In the year of his team debut, Jürgen Werner I was also honored as Upper Austrian Sportsman of the Year. Under Branko Elsner he was a regular player, but later no longer considered by Josef Hickersberger for the 1990 World Cup qualification. Meanwhile, the midfielder had to go back to the middle play-off with VOEST in 1987/88 , which ended after a 3-0 defeat in the decisive game against SK Austria Klagenfurt with the relegation of Linz to the 2nd division .

Together with Georg Zellhofer , Jürgen Werner I was then brought to SK Sturm Graz in Styria. Despite other well-known commitments such as Walter Schachner , Sturm also had to go into the middle play-off. Jürgen Werner and Georg Zellhofer therefore returned to VOEST in 1989, where they finally won the 2nd division and moved up to the 1st division in 1990/91 . As a player, Jürgen Werner I then returned to SK Eintracht Wels in 1992, as a manager he led FC Linz until the merger in 1997 and then announced that he would not participate in the newly merged club.

In 1998 Werner founded the player agency Stars & Friends , for which he himself worked as a player consultant. After selling his shares in 2019, he will act as Vice President of the Austrian Bundesliga club Linzer ASK (LASK) .
