Jürgen Winkler (mountaineer)

Jürgen Winkler (* 1940 in Berlin ) is a German mountaineer , photographer and non-fiction author.

Life

Born in Berlin, he grew up in Frankenberg (Eder) . After moving to Frankfurt am Main , he began mountaineering in the late 1950s. From the 1960s onwards, he became increasingly active as a photographer. He took photos for the book “Im extreme rock”, which was published in 1970 with Walter Pause .

In 1970 he was a member of the Siegi Löw memorial expedition to Nanga Parbat together with Reinhold Messner and his younger brother Günther , Gerhard Baur , Werner Haim and many others. Due to a lost crampon, he could not get to the summit and had to break off before reaching Camp 4.

His illustrated books "Nepal" and "Himalaya" were published in 1976 and 2000 respectively.
