Jaan Õunapuu (born September 13, 1958 in Mustjala on the island of Saaremaa , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian politician . He has been a member of the Center Party since September 13, 2018 and was previously a member of the Social Democrats and the Estonian People's Union .

Life

Jaan Õunapuu graduated from school in 1977 in the island's capital Kingissepa (now Kuressaare ) on the largest Estonian island of Saaremaa. In 1982 he graduated from the Estonian Academy of Agriculture (now the Estonian University of Environmental Sciences ) in Tartu, South Estonia, as a zoo engineer .

From 1982 to 1983 Õunapuu was employed as a zoo engineer on a state farm in Puhja near Tartu. In 1984/85 he was deputy director of an agricultural combine and from 1985 to 1990 chief zoo technician of a sovkhoz in Luunja .

In 2007/2008 Õunapuu worked in the private sector for a rapeseed oil producer. From 2008 to 2010 he was the managing director of the Tartu County Municipal Association.

Shortly before Estonian regained independence, Õunapuu went into politics. From 1990 to 1993 he was mayor of the rural community of Luunja. From 1993 to 2003 he held the office of the District Administrator of Tartu County .

In November 2002 Õunapuu joined the agrarian Estonian People's Union ( Eestimaa Rahvaliit ). From April 2003 to April 2005, Õunapuu was Regional Minister of the Republic of Estonia in the coalition government of Prime Minister Juhan Parts . He held the same office from April 2005 to April 2007 in the government of Prime Minister Andrus Ansip .

From May 2010 Õunapuu was a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ). A year later he resigned from the declining Estonian People's Union. Like other leading party members, he joined the Social Democratic Party (SDE).

After failing to win a seat in the 2015 elections , he switched to the Center Party in the run-up to the 2019 parliamentary elections . However, this time he was again denied entry into the Riigikogu .

Private

Jaan Õunapuu is married. He has a son and a daughter.
