Jardins de Mossèn Costa i Llobera
The Jardins de Mossèn Costa i Llobera are among the most important themed gardens in Europe. The park is located at the foot of Montjuïc in Barcelona and is named after the Mallorcan priest and poet Miquel Costa i Llobera . The approximately 3 hectare gardens are home to a significant number of exotic plants from large parts of the world. The majority of the plants are cacti . But you can also find other exotic plants, especially subtropical palm trees .
location
The park is located in the Sants-Montjuïc district . The entrance is located south of the city hill between Carretera de Miramar and Paseo de Josep Carner. This part of the city enjoys a special microclimate that is around 2 or 3 degrees higher than the average temperature in Barcelona. The reason for this is the sheltered location of the park, which offers optimal conditions for planting tropical plants. The park offers a spectacular view of the coast and the port of Barcelona. It is only a kilometer away from the Columbus statue at the end of the Rambla, but cannot be seen from the city.
history
The gardens were laid out in 1970 under the guidance of Joan Pañella Bonastre and are dedicated to the poet Miquel Costa I Llobera. In 1987 the park was voted one of the 10 most beautiful parks in the world by a journalist for the New York Times.
botany
The park is home to around 800 different cacti and other desert plants. The plants come from all parts of the desert, but mainly from Africa , America and Australia . There are also a large number of palm species and a few other subtropical trees. A special specimen stands out among the cacti: a 200 year old Oreocereus celsianus .
Current
In 2006 the park was closed due to improvement work and only reopened in 2011 after some technical problems (geological stability and drainage).
