Albert John "Jack" Allen (born October 16, 1891 in Moston , Manchester , † October 23, 1971 in Crumpsall , Manchester) was an English football player . The defender made 176 appearances in the Football League between 1914 and 1927 , including 52 for Manchester City in the First Division .
Career
Allen played in the Manchester area as a local amateur and was registered for Glossop FC with the Football League in September 1914 . After a series of four defeats, he moved into the team in December 1914 and made his debut in the Second Division as a right-back in a 1-0 home win against Fulham . Allen mostly formed the defender pair with William Ward or John Cuffe and kept his place until the end of the season, when Glossop was at the bottom of the table by a clear margin. In the subsequent re-election Glossop received only one vote and was eliminated from the Football League.
Allen then moved to Manchester City's First Division in September 1915 , with the suspension of gaming due to the First World War , in which Allen served as a lieutenant in Italy , but it lasted until April 1920 before he made his competitive debut. At City he played until 1924, he was part of the regular team for a long time in the 1922/23 season , when he played 27 games this season. Mostly the position of the left defender was occupied by Eli Fletcher , therefore Allen also came to a total of 107 appearances for the reserve team in the Central League . In 1921 he won the Lancashire Senior Cup with the club at Old Trafford by a 2-1 final win over the Bolton Wanderers .
In June 1924 he moved to the Third Division North for Southport FC and completed 36 games for the club. After a season with league rivals Crewe Alexandra (30 missions), he ended his career in the Football League in 1927 after another season with Southport. He then played for Lancaster Town in the Lancashire Combination until 1929 . After retiring, he made a living as an insurance agent for the Royal London Mutual Insurance Company , appeared as an announcer on police shows and lived in Southport for ten years before moving to Manchester after the death of his second wife.
