Albert Allen (born April 7, 1867 in Aston , † October 13, 1899 in Birmingham ) was an English football player .

Career

Allen joined Aston Villa , one of the leading societies of the day, from his St Phillips school team in August 1884 . Until he was promoted to the regular team, he had to be patient for some time; at Aston Villas victory in the FA Cup 1886/87 he was not yet involved. After he was used in the FA Cup for the first time in the following season , he was an integral part of the storm series in 1888 when the Football League started playing . As early as April 1888, he was nominated for an international match between England and Ireland and formed the left attacking side together with his club mate Dennis Hodgetts when he contributed three hits to the 5-1 victory at the Ulster Cricket Ground in Belfast . His first division debut took place on September 8, 1888 in a 1-1 away game against Wolverhampton Wanderers, his first league goal he achieved a week later on September 15, 1888 in a 5-1 home win over FC Stoke.

In the first league season he was the top scorer of his team with 18 goals this season and scored in the 9-1 win on September 29, 1888 against Notts County as the first Villa player a hat trick in league football. Behind the "Invincibles" of Preston North End , he finished 2nd in the table with Villa at the end of the season. In the following two seasons Villa slipped into the middle of the table and Allen, who gradually lost his form after an "ugly accident", ended his professional career in 1891 for health reasons. He played his last first division match on December 26, 1890 in a 0-0 home game against AFC Sunderland. He later played with the former Villa player Arthur Brown at the local level for the Evesham Wanderers , with whom he won the Studley and District League in 1895 and 1896 .

Allen earned his living as a mastermind . In December 1898 he fell ill with tuberculosis and died of the disease at the age of 32 in October 1899. A “large crowd” attended his funeral, including Sam Law, Albert Brown , Harry Yates and Jimmy Warner numerous villa players ; his former strike partner Hodgetts was one of the pallbearers. He left behind his wife and five children.
