Jack Hibberd
John Charles "Jack" Hibberd AM (born April 12, 1940 in Warracknabeal , Yarriambiack Shire , Victoria ) is an Australian playwright and author .
biography
Hibberd is married to actress Evelyn Krape and has two children with her: Spike and Molly. The children Lily (1972) and James (1984) are from the first marriage. He is a co-founder of the Australian Performing Group (APG). In 1983 he founded the Melbourne Writers Theater.
Career
His first piece, White With Wire Wheels , was performed at Melbourne University in 1967 . Shortly thereafter, his short play Three Old Friends was the first production, which premiered at La Mama Theater on July 29, 1967 in a cast with Graeme Blundell, Bruce Knappet and David Kendall. Hibberd's best-known plays are Dimboola (1969) and A Stretch of the Imagination (1972). 1973, David Williamson directed the performance of Dimboola at the Pram Factory. In 1979 the play was made into a film. A Stretch of the Imagination has been performed in England, the USA, Germany and China.
The Mama Theater hosted a 40th anniversary production of Three Old Friends and Just Before the Honeymoon and This Great Gap of Time . The premiere was on July 18, 2007, directed by Matt Scholten. There were also two productions of A Stretch of the Imagination . One was directed by Laurence Strangio (a recast with two cast members) and another by Greg Carroll. In 2008 La Mama performed Dimboola again.
In 2009, HIT Productions went on a 14-week tour of 26 venues with a new performance of A Stretch of the Imagination . Directed by Denis Moore, with John Wood in the lead .
