At the beginning of his musical career, Montrose worked with Jerry Gray in 1953 and in Art Pepper's quintet in 1954. Since then he has been a freelance tenor saxophonist and arranger on the west coast of the USA, working with Chet Baker , Bob Gordon , John Grass , Lennie Niehaus , Shorty Rogers, but also made records with the singers Mel Tormé and Abbey Lincoln . Under his own name he recorded several albums with Red Norvo and Jim Hall ; his relative lack of success eventually forced him to drop out of the jazz scene and play in the casinos of Las Vegas .
It was not until 1977 that he took up jazz again and since 1986 has played several albums with Pete Jolly .

Jack Montrose is not to be confused with the tenor saxophonist JR Monterose .
