Jack Welpott

Jack Welpott (born April 27, 1923 in Kansas City , † November 24, 2007 ) was an American photographer .

Life

Jack Welpott was born in Kansas City on April 27, 1923, the youngest of three sons to Ray C. Welpott and Delores Davenroy of St. Louis , Missouri . He spent his childhood in St. Louis and Sadalia, in 1933 the family moved to Bloomington , Indiana . Under the influence of his uncle Cal Welpott, he began taking photos in 1935.

He began studying at Indiana University , but was drafted into the US Air Force in 1943 and served as a radio supervisor in the South Pacific until 1946 . After the Second World War he returned to Indiana University, where he studied photography with Henry Holmes Smith and painting with Leon Golub . As the first student there, he completed his studies with a Master of Fine Arts in photography, followed by Jerry Uelsmann as the second graduate . During his studies he also met Minor White , Aaron Siskind and Harry Callahan . In 1959, Welpott received a teaching position at San Francisco State University , was promoted to associate professor in 1961 and full professor in 1971 , where he worked until 1992.

Services

Welpott worked primarily as a university lecturer and is one of the founders of photography. His students include Judy Dater , Leland Rice, Michael Bishop, Harvey Himelfarb, John Spence Weir, and Catherine Wagner. His works are represented in the collections of the Getty Museum , the Museum of Modern Art , the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the George Eastman House , among others . In 1973 he received the Medal of the Rencontres d'Arles .
