Jerry Uelsmann
Jerry Norman Uelsmann (born June 11, 1934 in Detroit ) is an American photographer . He became known for his surreal photomontages, which were created on the basis of his own negatives with the help of multiple exposures in the darkroom , long before this was possible with digital image processing.
Life
Jerry Uelsmann studied photography from 1953 to 1957 at the Rochester Institute of Technology with Minor White and Ralph Hattersley and from 1958 to 1960 at Indiana University with Henry Holmes Smith, audiovisual communication. After graduating with a Master of Fine Arts degree , he began teaching photography at the University of Florida . The first solo exhibitions of his works took place in 1963 at the Jacksonville Art Museum Florida and in 1967 at the Museum of Modern Art .
technology
The multiple exposure process has been used by Oscar Rejlander and Henry Peach Robinson since 1850 . Uelsmann developed it further by using a separate enlarger for each negative that made up the final image .
