For his first full-length feature film, Toto the Hero , he was awarded the Golden Camera (Best First Feature) at the Cannes International Film Festival . The grown old Thomas ( Michel Bouquet and Jo De Backer ) remembers being exchanged with his hated friend Alfred ( Peter Böhlke and Didier Ferney ) when he was born. Thomas's life was just as much a succession of failure as Alfred's was a success. He takes revenge.

In his second feature film On the Eighth Day , Georges ( Pascal Duquenne ), a man with Down syndrome who has left home in search of his mother, meets the successful but privately retired businessman Harry ( Daniel Auteuil ) Accident in his car. Harry, who is initially very distant, realizes that he has more to learn from Georges than from many people without disabilities. Auteuil and Duquenne were jointly awarded the Best Actor Award in Cannes in 1996.

After the success in Cannes, Van Dormael mainly occupied himself with theater work. In 2009 he received an invitation to compete at the 66th Venice Film Festival for his film Mr. Nobody .
