During his time in Greenland, Jacob Arøe began drawing without ever having received any artistic training. He painted the places where he worked, especially Qaqortoq. His drawings were very detailed, so much so that they could be used as cards for building registration, but he also painted very naively . At first his works were drawn from a bird's eye view , later he always painted a foreground in front of the local views, which marked his location. He also made trips to the ruins of Grænlendingar , drawing a detailed map of Tasermiut Kangerluat . After his return to Denmark, he continued to draw Greenlandic views of the place based on his own earlier sketches, others were created using templates from, for example, Jørgen Nielsen Møller or Hans Peter Christian Møller .

Jacob Arøes made three views of Nuuk (1817, 1838, 1845), six from Paamiut (1817, 2 × 1835, 1840, 1845, one undated), four from Qeqertarsuatsiaat (1818, 1845, 1848, one undated), seven from Qaqortoq (1819, 1832, 1840, 1843, 1845, two undated), four from Sissarissoq (1834, 1840, 1846, one undated), three from Narsarmijit (1834, 1846, 1855), two from Sisimiut (1842, 1845) , two from Qerrortusoq (1846, one undated), two from Maniitsoq (1843, 1845), one from Neu-Herrnhut (1846), one from Akunnaat (1846) and three from Alluitsoq (1846, 1856, one undated). Many of these works are exhibited in the National Museum of Denmark , the National Museum of Greenland or the Danish Maritime Museum.
