Jacob Israel (born June 3, 1621 in Düsseldorf , † February 17, 1674 in Heidelberg ) was a German doctor, city ​​physician and professor in Heidelberg.

After attending grammar schools in Duisburg and Cologne, Jacob Israel studied in the Netherlands, England and France and was finally awarded a doctorate in 1650 in Freiburg im Breisgau. med. PhD. In March 1651, he was hired as town physician in Heidelberg and in December 1652 by Elector Karl Ludwig professor at the local university appointed. He taught physiology , anatomy and surgery , then from 1672 medical practice, pathology and pharmacy . In 1658 he held the office of Vice-Rector of the University (Rector was, so to speak, "honoris causa" a Count of Nassau-Saarbrücken) and in 1662, 1670 and 1673 that of Rector. In 1665 he was appointed by the Elector General Doctor and Overseer in the hospitals of the Sapienzkollegium and the orphanages in Handschuhsheim and Mannheim .

Jacob Israel hosted public sections of human bodies for an entrance fee. He enforced the ban on pig farming in the city of Heidelberg. He lived at Dreikönigstrasse 10, where his widow is still mentioned until 1686.
