Jacobus van Wageningen (1916)

Jacobus van Wageningen (born February 2, 1864 in Nijmegen , † October 16, 1923 in Groningen ) was a Dutch classical philologist .

Life

Jacobus van Wageningen studied from 1882 to 1888 Classics at the University of Utrecht (at Henricus van Herwerden and Cornelis Marinus Francken ), where he on 20 October 1888 the title summa cum laude to the Dr. phil. received his doctorate . He then taught at the grammar school in Tiel and from 1889 at the Praedinius grammar school in Groningen , where he was appointed vice principal in 1902. During this time he wrote several auxiliary books for school lessons: His Gids voor Gymnasiasten (1890), a translation of Martin Wohlrab's manual published shortly before (1889), saw numerous new editions. In 1892 he published an introduction to the Greek theory of forms . In the same year the first delivery of his Latin dictionary (completed in 1900), which remained in use for a long time, appeared.

On July 21, 1903 van Wageningen was appointed full professor of Latin linguistics and literary studies at the University of Groningen (as the successor to Jacob Samuel Speyer ). He gave his inaugural address on October 17, 1903, on characteristics of the Latin language and literature. In the academic year 1915/1916 he was the rector of the university. On April 28, 1916, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences elected him a full member.

In his research, van Wageningen dealt with wide areas of ancient literature. He wrote critical text editions of the Cicero speech Pro Caelio (1908), the satires of Aulus Persius Flaccus (1911), Seneca's tragedy Phaedra (1918) and the dialogue Octavius (1923) by Minucius Felix , a reconstruction of Cicero's Consolatio ad se ipsum (1916) as well as studies on Roman theater and stage affairs. His research focus was particularly on ancient astrology , on which he presented several studies and editions: 1903 an edition of the picture table of Kebes , 1915 an edition of the Astronomica by Marcus Manilius , 1921 a commentary on it. His text edition (in the Bibliotheca Teubneriana ) was in competition with the edition by Alfred Edward Housman (1903–1930).
