Jacques Berque
Jacques Augustin Berque (born June 4, 1910 in Frenda , Algeria , † June 27, 1995 in Saint-Julien-en-Born , Landes , France ) was a French scholar of Islam and sociologist . His area of expertise was the decolonization of Algeria and Morocco and the Arab world in general.
biography
Berque was born to French parents in Frenda, Algeria (now in the province of Tiaret ). He was a pied noir , i.e. H. a white European settler in Algeria. His father, Augustin Berque, was an orientalist. Jacques Berque graduated from the University of Algiers and received his Master of Arts degree in 1930. He joined the French army and worked as a civil servant in Morocco from 1934 to 1944 . As such, he worked as an agronomist , trying to improve Moroccan agriculture and farmers' lives. He later became administrators of the Seksawa tribe near Imi n'Tanout, Atlas Mountains . A five-year stay among them led to the book Structures Sociales du Haut-Atlas (1955, also dissertation), which established his scientific reputation. The work is considered a solid ethnography of the Berbers . Jacques Berque spent his last years in a region in southwestern France where the Berque family came from. He died in Saint-Julien-en-Born.
career path
In 1947, Berque became a Middle East expert for UNESCO . In 1953 he was sent to Egypt and returned to Paris two years later. After the publication of his dissertation he became director of Muslim sociological studies at the École pratique des hautes études and a year later, in 1956, professor of the social history of contemporary Islam at the Collège de France ; he held a position until his retirement in 1981. He later headed the Ministry of Research (1981–1982) and the Ministry of Education (1984–1985).
He was also the translator of the Koran .
