Jacques Gomboust

Jacques Gomboust (* 1616 in Paris ; † probably 1663 there ) was a French cartographer . His plans of French cities, published as copperplate engravings , above all a nine-sheet plan of Paris, achieved a previously unknown quality thanks to their precise and correctly positioned representation.

Life

Gomboust was the son of Richard Gomboust. Nothing is known about his youth and education. He gained recognition in fortress construction , he was awarded the title of Ingénieur du Roi ("Royal Engineer"). Gomboust apparently acquired knowledge of surveying and the drawing of maps with the preparation of military maps that were needed for campaigns in the Thirty Years' War .

Gomboust also worked as a draftsman and engraver. His topographical maps and plans were so highly valued for their accuracy and richness of detail that Gomboust was granted the sole royal privilege to draw up city maps of French cities.

Gomboust married twice: in 1648 Claude Piraud and after 1657 Marie Gombert. Gomboust's date of death is not known, presumably he died in 1663, at the latest in the first months of 1664, probably in Paris. His widow continued issuing his cards with her new husband, Zacharie Heince .

In Paris ( 1st arrondissement ) the Rue Gomboust bears his name.
