The Jacquinia are a plant genus from the subfamily of Theophrastoideae .

description

Jacquinia species are richly branched shrubs or small trees . The leaves are entire, small, occasionally needle-like and have a thorn at the tip.

The terminal racemose inflorescence contains few to many flowers . The flowers are five-fold and hermaphroditic. The crown is bell-shaped to urn-shaped, orange, white or yellow. The appendages of the crown are flattened and resemble the corolla. The stamens are united at the base and the anthers are obtuse-triangular.

The fruit is roughly round or oblong, the pericarp is thickened and lignified or thin and wrinkled.

distribution

The genus Jacquinia is native to the West Indies and from Mexico to northern South America.

Systematics

The genus Jacquinia was first described in 1759 and is named after the Austrian botanist and chemist Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin .

It contains about 32 species, including:

  • Jacquinia aculeata (L.) Mez : It occurs in Cuba and Hispaniola.
  • Jacquinia arborea Vahl : It occurs on islands in the Caribbean, in Mexico, Honduras and Venezuela.
  • Jacquinia armillaris Jacq. : It occurs in Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and on islands in the Caribbean.
  • Jacquinia aurantiaca W.T. Aiton : It occurs from Mexico to Honduras and Panama. Some authors put it as Bonellia macrocarpa (Cav.) B. Ståhl & Källersjö to Bonellia .
  • Jacquinia berteroi Spreng. : It was first described from the Dominican Republic.
  • Jacquinia keyensis Mez : It occurs in southern Florida, Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, the Bahamas and the Cayman Islands .
  • Jacquinia nervosa C. Presl : It was first described from Mexico.
  • Jacquinia panamensis Lundell : It was first described from Panama. It is also called Bonellia macrocarpa subsp. panamensis (Lundell) B. Ståhl & Källersjö to the genus Bonellia .
