Jagalur ( Kannada : ಕನ್ನಡ) is a city with around 20,000 inhabitants in the Davanagere district in the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka .
location
Jagalur is located near the geographical center of Karnataka at an altitude of approx. 680 m above sea level. d. M .; the district capital Davanagere is about 50 km (driving distance) to the west. Because of the altitude, the climate is rather moderate by Indian standards; Rain falls mainly during the monsoon months May to October.

Approx. 78.5% of the majority Kannada- speaking population are Hindus and about 21% are Muslims ; other religions ( Jains , Sikhs , Buddhists , Christians etc.) form numerically small minorities. The male population is slightly higher than the female.
economy
The inhabitants of Jagalur live mainly as craftsmen, small traders and small service providers or day laborers . Wheat , lentils and chickpeas are mainly grown in the fields in the area , but coconut and betel nut palms also play important roles in the region's economic life.
history
Jagalur belonged to the Rashtrakuta , and later to the Chalukya and Hoysala empires. In the 15th and first half of the 16th century, the area was part of the Vijayanagar Empire, in 1690 it came under the control of the princely state of Mysore , whose rule, however, in the second half of the 18th century by Hyder Ali (r . 1761–1782) and his son Tipu Sultan (r. 1782–1799) was interrupted. After that, the British played the dominant military and economic role in South India until independence (1947).
