history

On April 15, 1882, hunters founded the Swiss Association for Hunters and Wildlife Protection in Geneva under the name Diana. Under the leadership of the founding president Edmond Eynard from Rolle , this club worked out the first foundations for a nationwide hunting club. One of the main goals of the initiators was to unite hunting groups from all over Switzerland and to found a broad-based national association. The first “Central Board” consisted of hunters from the cantons of Geneva , Vaud , Friborg , Lucerne and Graubünden . The number of members increased rapidly: one year after it was founded, the association already had 285 members. In 1890, over 1,000 hunters were members of the Diana. They were organized in 23 sections in several cantons. At the beginning of the 20th century, the nationwide organization disintegrated in view of the emerging discussions about the introduction of territory hunting. For this purpose, regional associations of the area and patent hunters emerged . Diana Suisse only survived in French-speaking Switzerland. When, at the end of the 20th century, the need for a cross-system and nationwide organization was recognized, the new umbrella organization JagdSchweiz / ChasseSuisse / CacciaSvizzera / CatschaSvizra was set up on the still existing Diana.

First tasks and goals

At the time of the founding, the game population had decreased massively due to uncontrolled hunting and poaching and some species were no longer available. The founders of Diana therefore set themselves two main goals. On the one hand, Switzerland should be repopulated with more game in order to be able to live the freedom of hunting at all. Since the political authorities have so far done very little to reintroduce the game, Diana saw it as the task of the hunters in all parts of the country to point out the urgency of the project and to encourage the authorities to work with the hunters on the path of protection and reproduction of the game to tread. On the other hand, the aim was to insist on the strict enforcement of the federal hunting law . Because in some cantons the police were not very successful in their work against poaching. Diana wanted to campaign for a further development of the Swiss hunting law, for a better hunting police and for a fight against wrongdoers and poachers.

Purpose today

According to the statutes, the purpose of the association today is to maintain and promote contemporary hunting in Switzerland. The association has the following statutory purpose:

  • Promotion and conservation of the wild fauna and its habitats
  • Representation of the interests of the Swiss hunting community at home and abroad
  • Preservation and continuation of pasture-friendly and sustainable hunting, while safeguarding and promoting the interests of all hunters and taking into account the existing hunting systems, the different types of hunting as well as the cultural and scenic diversity in Switzerland
  • Support the members
  • Ensuring national public relations
  • Cooperation with related organizations
