Jagged Alliance 2: Wildfire is a stand-alone expansion of the turn-based strategy game Jagged Alliance 2 . It came onto the market in March 2004 through the Canadian publisher Strategy First , and in April 2005 Zuxxez published the game in Germany.

Action and gameplay

Wildfire is not a new game, but a modification of the original game. Therefore, the basic premise and plot of the game have not changed either. The player is supposed to free the island state from the hands of his tyrannical ex-wife Deidranna Reitman with a mercenary troop on behalf of the former ruler of Arulco, Enrico Chivaldori.

The new features of the game are an extensive revision of the existing game content. Starting with the selection of the mercenaries, both the questionnaires for creating your own character and the mercenary list were revised and partially replaced. The maximum squad size was increased from six to ten mercenaries with Wildfire v6.0 and the screen resolution from 640 × 480 to 1024 × 768 pixels. 20 new weapons and a new balancing of the existing weapons should give a more realistic impression, including new sounds.

The sectors have also been revised, objects and items have been moved and new environment details, including cover options, have been added. The number of computer opponents has been increased significantly and their combat behavior has been greatly revised, which greatly increases the level of difficulty compared to the original game. They are increasingly looking for cover and setting up ambushes.

development

Wildfire emerged from the modding work of Serge Popov. Popov tried to convey a more realistic gameplay feel with his mod, which is why he made many changes to the weapons, landscapes, structures and the game behavior of the opponents. For commercial marketing, Popov founded his development company i-Deal Games.

The then rights holder of the Jagged Alliance license, Strategy First, released the mod in version 5.0 in March 2004 as an official, stand-alone expansion on the North American market. The source code of the main game was added to this version . Since i-Deal, by its own account, was never paid by the now insolvent Strategy First, the developer ended the collaboration. In Germany and on the European market, Wildfire was published by Zuxxez, the successor company to the European JA2 publisher Topware Interactive . This version was based on version 6.0 of the previous modification, but no longer contained the source code of the game.

Wildfire's ratings were mixed.

“Why Jagged Alliance 2 Wildfire was even released remains a mystery to me: after all, the main program is already six years old! New weapons, mercenaries, revised sectors, and a better balance are all well and good, but they don't justify a full-price title. The gameplay is still bursting with complexity and an incredible number of possible courses of action, but the ravages of time are gnawing away. Increasing the resolution doesn't help much. Much worse, however, is that Jagged Alliance 2 Wildfire suffers from quite a few bugs and is therefore anything but stable. "

“If you've never played JA2, it's still worth getting, despite its 640 x 480 resolution, for its intriguing combination of strategy and RPG, rich humor and ever-changing challenges. But if you know the title well, we recommend taking a pass on Wildfire. This earnest but unimaginative release makes the game much tougher, but no more interesting. "
