View into the stadium

The Jahnstadion is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Lower Saxony city of Göttingen . The sports facility with 17,000 seats is located in the sports park of the city of Göttingen, east of the Kiessee recreation area and the Leine river and south of the Sandweg in the south of the city. The sports park has next to the stadium z. B. over five soccer fields, numerous training fields, a boules pitch , a baseball field and two children's playgrounds.

history

The Jahn Stadium was inaugurated on October 26, 1913 and is named after the gymnastics father Friedrich Ludwig Jahn . For the conditions at the time, the “Jahnspielplatz” was a fairly well-equipped sports field. In 1987 the Jahnstadion was renovated and equipped in the west with a roofed grandstand that could hold a good 5,000 spectators. In the east there was the “old back straight” until 2008, when the stadium was completely modernized.

Description of the stadium

overview

Together with the two curves, the facility offers more than 12,000 uncovered standing places. The curves only offer a few steps, which were in very poor condition until the repair in 2013. Approx. 2/3 of the curves consist, in addition to the steps, largely of mounds of earth overgrown with lawn. At the ends of both curves leading to the main stand, there are blocks that are slightly enlarged upwards and fastened with steps. This area of the north curve regularly offers space for guest fans during football matches. In the south curve there is a currently defective electronic display board. While the still contemporary main grandstand in the west houses the stadium control room, press areas and VIP room, the team cabins and the running hose, a small athletics hall, are located under the grandstand on the back straight. A stadium restaurant was planned above the grandstand. The main entrance is in the north on Sandweg. Another entrance is in the northeast at the parking lot and was only open to holders of season tickets and advance booking tickets for I. SC Göttingen 05. There is also a currently unused entrance at the rear of the south curve. During the home games of I. SC Göttingen 05 there was a fan shop in the northeast of the stadium.

use

Until 2003 it was the home stadium of 1. SC Göttingen 05 , which played the football matches of its first men's team in the 2. Bundesliga , regional league and major league there . The last home game took place at the end of September 2003 on the eighth game day of the fifth-class Lower Saxony league . After a failed insolvency procedure that had been pending for over two years, the association was deleted from the register of associations in October 2003. After that, the stadium was not used regularly.

During the 2006 World Cup , the stadium served as a training ground for the Mexican national soccer team , which won 3-0 in a preparatory game against a Göttingen selection.

The successor club of almost the same name to 1. SC Göttingen 05, I. SC Göttingen 05 , currently plays in the regional league and, after temporarily using the Jahnstadion, only plays its home games in the Maschpark . The place of the many fan clubs, including the umbrella organization 05 Supporters Crew , was on the back straight and in Block F on the grandstand.

In 2013, the German Junior Athletics Championships took place in the Jahn Stadium.

modification

Renovation in 2008

In the course of a comprehensive modernization in 2008, in which the entire athletics facilities of the stadium were renewed, the "old back straight" was torn down and rebuilt a good eight meters closer to the playing field (directly on the running track). The previous slight curve shape was given up in favor of a straight line. Up until this point, in addition to the large distance to the playing field, the roofed team benches between the standing areas and the playing field hindered the view of the action. The running hose, a warm-up hall with a 60 m lane and long jump pit, was also built under the east stand.

Planned renovations

Equipping with floodlights is being considered, but will depend on the sporting development, especially of the Göttingen football clubs. With probably comparatively manageable effort (floodlights, block separation, continuation of the renovation of the curves), the stadium could be put into a condition that would meet the requirements of the DFB for the new regional league. A lot has happened in recent years with the construction of various training facilities (including artificial turf ) and the creation of numerous new parking spaces directly at the stadium. However, due to the regional league reform for the 2012/13 season, the same requirements apply as in the Lower Saxony Oberliga , so that renovation measures would not be absolutely necessary in the event of promotion to the regional league.
