The leaf lots saxifrage ( Saxifraga aphylla ) is a species in the genus saxifrage ( Saxifraga ) in the family of the Saxifragaceae (Saxifragaceae). It thrives in the eastern Alps mainly in limestone areas . It is also called naked stem saxifrage , stem- leaved saxifrage or narrow-leaved saxifrage .

Vegetative characteristics

The leafless saxifrage grows as an evergreen, perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 1 to 5 centimeters. It grows in loose cushions.

The 1 to 3, rarely up to 5 centimeters long, spatulate to lanceolate, loosely glandular to bare rosette leaves have a wedge-shaped base and at the top three or less often five with a length of 1.5 to 3 millimeters and 1 to 1.5 millimeters relatively wide, large, blunt teeth. Stem leaves are almost never present. There are glandular hairs on the leaves.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from July to August or September, depending on the location. The flowers are usually solitary on the upright, leafless, loosely glandular inflorescence stem.

The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The petals are about one to one and a half times as long and much narrower as the sepals . The pale yellow petals are linear with a length of 2 to 2.5 millimeters with a pointed upper end.

Chromosome set

The basic chromosome number is x = 10; there is often hexaploidy with a chromosome number of 2n = 60.

ecology

The leafless saxifrage is a Chamaephyte .

The leafless saxifrage is pronounced protandric and self-compatible. From an ecological point of view, these are disc flowers with open nectar or a transition type from flowers with exposed honey to disgusting flowers. Typical pollinators are flies and beetles .

The seeds serve as diaspores .

Occurrence

The leafless saxifrage thrives in large parts of the Eastern Alps from the Northern to the Central Eastern Alps , mainly in limestone areas . There are localities for Germany , Austria , Liechtenstein , Switzerland and Italy . In Austria Saxifraga aphylla is widespread in the alpine altitude range , it is absent in Vienna, Burgenland and Carinthia.

This limestone species usually thrives in rock debris with long snow cover. It is a character species of the Thlaspietum rotundifolii in the association of the Thlaspion rotundifolii and also thrives in damp rock crevices. It occurs at altitudes from 1500 to 3200 meters. In the Allgäu Alps, it rises from an altitude of 1650 meters on a gravel field southwest of the Gehrenspitze (Tannheimer Berge) to 2645 meters at the highest point of the Mädelegabel .

Systematics

The first description of Saxifraga aphylla was set up in 1810 by Kaspar Maria von Sternberg in Revisio Saxifragarum , page 40, plate 11. A synonym for Saxifraga aphylla Sternb. is Saxifraga stenopetala Gaudin .

The species Saxifraga aphylla belongs to the series Sedoides from the subsection Holophyllae in the section Saxifraga within the subgenus Saxifraga of the genus Saxifraga .
