Jaime Gil de Biedma (born November 13, 1929 in Barcelona ; † January 8, 1990 there ) was a Spanish poet and one of the most important authors of his generation .

Life

Coming from one of the richest trading houses in Barcelona, he studied law in Barcelona and Salamanca and moved to Oxford after the state examination in 1953 . There he came into contact with Anglo-Saxon poetry , which strongly influenced him in his work. He felt drawn to Marxism at an early age , but he was frowned upon by the Communist Party for his openly lived homosexuality - as well as by the rulers in Madrid who denied him a diplomatic career. In 1955 he then joined the family business "Tabacos de Filipinas".

Along with José Agustín Goytisolo and Carlos Barral, he is considered to be one of the main exponents of the self-appointed Escuela de Barcelona . As early as 1968, Gil de Biedma regarded his lyrical oeuvre as complete with his Poemas póstumos . His relatively narrow lyric work, published in 1975 under the title Las personas del verbo , makes him one of the most influential Spanish poets of the second half of the 20th century.

In addition to a few essays, he left a diary in which, in contrast to the coded expression of his poems, he clearly discussed his homosexuality ( Retrato del artista en 1956 , 1974, uncensored 1991).

In 1990 he died of AIDS .

In 2004 his biography was written by Miguel Dalmau and filmed in 2009 by the Spanish director Sigfrid Monleón. The film is called El Cónsul de Sodoma (Eng. The Consul of Sodom).
