Jainaba Bah

Jainaba Bah (born October 25, 1963 ) is a Gambian activist, politician and diplomat.

Bah's father Sulayman Bah came from Timbi-Madina ( Guinea ) and worked as a cattle dealer in South Gambia and South West Senegal. Her parents lived in Farafenni . She got her name from her maternal grandmother, Jainabou.

In 1983 she graduated from St. Joseph's High School and then worked as a teacher at the Muslim High School (now the Muslim Senior Secondary School ). She later worked for the Gambia National Insurance Company (GNIC) in the shipping and life insurance sectors.

Towards the end of her school days, she began to be politically active and after graduating from school she joined the Gambian section of the underground movement Movement for Justice in Africa-Gambia (MOJA-G). At the age of twenty, she was arrested and tortured by security forces for involvement in MOJA-G and participation in the student magazine Organ of the Revolutionary Students . As a result, she fled to Sweden with her husband and son in the mid-1980s, where she has lived ever since.

She studied pharmacy for a year at Uppsala University and then biomedicine and health care at the Karolinska Institute , which she completed with a master's degree. She worked as a microbiologist at the university and was with Amnesty International .

In 2013 she co-organized a congress of the Gambian diaspora in Stockholm and was briefly representative of the Committee for the restoration of democracy in the Gambia (CORDEG), which she left in July 2014 after internal conflicts.

In April 2015 she joined the United Democratic Party (UDP). She supported the opposition to the government of President Yahya Jammeh , for example in fundraising for the Coalition in 2016 in the Gambia presidential elections in 2016 , which the opposition won.

In May 2017 she was appointed Gambian Ambassador to Russia. This is said to have happened at the request of the UDP party leader Ousainou Darboe , who was initially vice-president under President Adama Barrow . After Darboe had to give up his ministerial offices in 2018/2019, Bah's two-year contract was initially not extended in mid-May 2019. At the end of May, the government announced an extension of her deployment so that she continues to work as an ambassador.

She is married to (Momodou) Sarjo Jallow , who held various ministerial offices in Gambia and was ambassador to Ethiopia , and they have four children with him. In 2008 her husband married another woman , Mamie / Mammy Ngum.
