Jairam Ramesh (Spring 2010)

Jairam Ramesh (born April 9, 1954 in Chikmagalur , Karnataka ) is an Indian politician of the National Congress (INC). In the Manmohan Singh II cabinet he was Environment Minister from 2009 to 2011 and from 2011 to 2014 he was Minister for Rural Development.

Ramesh is a member of the Brahmin caste and studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . In 2004 he was campaign manager for the INC and in this role contributed significantly to the party's victory in the 2004 general election .

In an interview with ' Zeit ' in June 2015, he pleaded for “not too fast” economic growth in India. He used to be an “economic hardliner” until, as Environment Minister, he got to know the price of growth - the destroyed forests, the landscapes that were sacrificed for coal mining and the contaminated Ganges . He has high hopes for Germany under Angela Merkel , which must achieve the energy transition towards renewable energies in order to be a global role model. The United States, on the other hand, has "zero credibility" when it comes to climate protection.
