Chikmagalur , officially Chikkamagaluru ( Kannada : ಚಿಕ್ಕಮಗಳೂರು Cikkamagaḷūru ) since 2014 , is a city with around 130,000 inhabitants in the Indian state of Karnataka . With effect from November 1, 2014, the city was renamed to its Kannada name form Chikkamagaluru ; it is the administrative center of the Chikmagalur district .

Location and climate

the city of Chikmagalur is about 250 km (driving distance) west of the capital Bangalore at the foot of the Baba Budan Mountains , an eastern branch of the Western Ghats , at an altitude of approx. 1035  m . Because of the altitude, the climate is moderate by Indian standards; Rain (approx. 1005 mm / year) falls almost exclusively in the monsoon months May to October.

About 70% of the population are Hindus and 25.5% Muslim ; the rest is attributable to other religions ( Christians approx. 3.5%, Jains approx. 1%). The male and female proportions of the population are roughly the same. The main languages ​​are Kannada and Hindi , while Urdu is common among Muslims .

economy

The area around the city is still largely agriculturally oriented; coffee is primarily grown . The city itself is a regionally important center for handicrafts, trade, small industry and services of all kinds.

history

About the history of the place is little known in the Middle Ages it belonged to the sphere of influence of the Hoysala -rich, in the 15th and 16th centuries it was under the control of the Vijayanagar -rich and later the British , the more in the surrounding mountains Hill Stations operated. The actual urban development did not take place until the 20th century.

Attractions

Chikmagalur itself has no sights of cultural or historical interest, but as a starting point for visits to the Hoysala Temple of Halebid , Belur , Korvangla and Doddagaddavalli , and the Jaina -Heiligtums Shravanabelagola of a certain tourist importance.
