In Maikop , Khanate of the Crimean Tatars ) was a Ukrainian ataman of the Azov Cossack Army and the Black Sea Cossack Army, major general of the Imperial Russian Army , poet, writer and ethnologist .

Life

As the son of a Zaporozhian Cossack , he attended the military school in Yekaterinodar and at the age of 15 entered the military service of the Cossack army, in which he later became an officer. He received the first award for courageous efforts in the battles of the Russo-Turkish War of 1828–1829 . He was interested in Ukrainian folklore and wrote poetry and stories about the life of the descendants of the Kuban Cossacks, who also fascinated his friend Taras Shevchenko , whom he probably met personally in Saint Petersburg in 1840.

On the night of September 19, 1862, he was attacked by Circassians and injured in their captivity, where he died a few days later. His son Stepan acquired the body to be buried near the cathedral in Ekaterinodar.
