Jakob Heinrich Hermann Schwartz (born November 3, 1821 in Neuenkirchen near Itzehoe , † October 30, 1890 in Göttingen ) was a German gynecologist and from 1862 to 1888 director of the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Georg August University in Göttingen .

Life

Hermann Schwartz studied from Easter 1842 at the University of Kiel with Gustav Adolph Michaelis , then at the University of Halle with Carl Conrad Theodor Litzmann , where he received his doctorate in 1858.

He went to Göttingen in 1862 with his son Eduard Schwartz (who studied from 1878). He took over from Eduard Caspar Jacob von Siebold , who was director from 1833 to 1861, there in 1862 the management of the clinic.

In 1870, Schwartz put Ignaz Semmelweis' teaching into practice in obstetrics. Furthermore, the anti-infection antiseptic wound treatment was introduced there. It was one of the prerequisites for introducing scheduled surgical gynecology and obstetrics.

The ovariotomy (surgical removal of ovaries ) under aseptic precautions was introduced in 1876 by him.

At Easter 1888 Schwartz retired due to illness. His successor was Max Runge .

Hermann Schwartz was married to Sophie Michaelis (1833–1882), a daughter of his teacher Gustav Adolph Michaelis (1798–1848).
